MAX or Telegram: where to launch a bot for clients - 8 points
Businesses ask the question “MAX or Telegram” not out of interest in instant messengers, but because of limited time: they want to assemble, test and maintain the bot in one place. There really is a difference between the platforms - in the audience, in the rules of the first message, in the buttons, in the risks. But it is smaller than it seems from the headlines, and almost does not concern the logic of the bot itself. Below are eight points on which the channels really diverge, and five situations when you should consciously leave one. In short: you have one script, but there may be two channels, and in CHBT this does not double the work.
Short answer in one table
If you don't have time to read, here's a condensed version. Details for each item - below.
| Item | Telegram | MAX |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Audience | The habit of “writing to a bot” is already there | Grows due to pre-installation and government services, a habit is formed |
| 2. Client login | Search by @name, link t.me, QR | Link to bot, QR; search is not yet the main path |
| 3. Buttons and formats | Inline buttons under the message, the indicator “prints” | Buttons under the message; There is no “printing” indicator in CHBT |
| 4. First message and broadcasts | Only to those who wrote; speed limits | Same rule; the young platform is more sensitive to frequency |
| 5. Deep links | t.me/bot?start=payload, QR from CHBT | Start parameter in bot link; QR - external generator |
| 6. Rules and moderation | Liberal but unpredictable | Russian jurisdiction, formal requirements for business |
| 7. Integrations | Huge ecosystem, any service | API there is, an ecosystem of third-party services for now thinner |
| 8. Risks | Regulatory: availability is not up to you | Platform: rules and API change |
Not a single line says “MAX doesn’t have buttons” or “you can’t notify in Telegram.” All basic tasks of a business bot - lead, recording, answering questions, notification, transfer to an operator - are solved in both. The differences are in the details and where your customers are now.
1. Audience: who has the application and who writes to business in it
Telegram has something that advertising cannot buy: habit. The person knows that the store “has a bot”, knows how to click “Launch”, and is not intimidated by the buttons. For the bot, this means less explanation at the input and higher accessibility to the end of the script.
MAX takes a different route: the application is pre-installed on new devices, and state and municipal services, schools, and housing and communal services operate through it. There is an audience, and it is noticeably wider than the “IT” audience, but the habit of writing in MAX business still in the formative stage. This is both a minus (the client needs to be led by the hand to the bot) and a plus: your bot in MAX will be the first for many, and it will be remembered.
The practical criterion is not national statistics, but your own base. Look at where your clients are writing to you now: if a significant part of requests are already coming to MAX, the channel was needed yesterday. If almost all correspondence is in Telegram, MAX can be connected as a second one - without expectations, but also without costs: the channel in CHBT is added to the same bot, and not created separately.
2. Client login: how a person ends up in a bot
In Telegram, the bot has three doors: search by name (@vash_bot), link t.me/vash_bot and a QR code with this link. The first one works on its own - a person can find the bot by seeing the name on the package. Inside the messenger, the bot has a “Launch” button, after clicking it sends /start, and the script begins.
In MAX, the main door is a link to the bot from the MAX account for business. In-app search is not yet a channel you should count on: the link must be placed explicitly - in a letter, on a receipt, on a website, in a manager’s signature. When the bot is opened, the platform sends a launch event, CHBT turns it into the same /start, and the script starts the same in both channels.
Conclusion for the login design: in Telegram it is acceptable to write “find bot @name” on a business card; in MAX - only a link or QR. The greeting script itself is the same; which first message works better is discussed separately in the article about first bot message.
3. Buttons and message formats
In CHBT both channels get the same set: text and buttons below the message; a button either opens a link or starts a flow branch. Everything you build in the “Message” block appears in both Telegram and MAX without changes, and neither channel gets media from this block — the bot sends photos and files only in the website widget. The only exception is AI sales assistant product cards: in Telegram they arrive with a photo, in MAX as text with a link.
The differences for the client are minor, and they're all on the MAX side: there's no “typing” indicator, and a t.me/… link takes the person to a different messenger. This doesn't affect the choice of platform, but when you connect a second channel, run through the whole flow — what usually needs editing and how to split texts with a “Condition” → “Channel” block is shown in the article one flow for two messengers.
4. Mailings and the first message rule
Here the platforms are the same in the main: the bot writes only to those who wrote to him first. Neither Telegram nor MAX allows you to download a phone database and send messages through it. The mailing list consists of people who opened the bot themselves. In Telegram, an attempt to write to a “foreign” user ends in an error (analysis is in the article about PEER_ID_INVALID), in MAX there is simply no conversation with such a person.
The differences are in sensitivity to frequency. Telegram has been living with bots for a long time and has clear limits on sending speed; CHBT sends broadcasts in a queue, no faster than 20 messages per second, and this is enough not to run into them. MAX is a younger platform, and an aggressive frequency there can result in bot silence: split up large broadcasts, do not launch two in a row.
The “Mailouts” section in CHBT is one for both channels: text with substitution {{name}}, audience by tags, delayed launch, statistics. The message goes to the channel where the contact came from: tag client for a person from Telegram it will go to Telegram, for a person from MAX it will go to MAX. There are no buttons or media in the broadcasts. The “Mailouts” section itself is available with the Basic plan (650 ₽ per bot per month). More details about the channel can be found on the pages newsletters in Telegram and broadcasts in MAX.
5. Deep links, QR and source tracking
Deep link is a link to a bot with a parameter by which the script understands where the person came from. In Telegram it is https://t.me/vash_bot?start=kassa; parameter kassa is caught in CHBT by the “Deep Link” trigger, and you put the “came from a check” tag. The “QR campaigns” section generates QR codes with such links for the project’s Telegram bot - convenient for package inserts and signs at the checkout.
In MAX, the link to the bot also takes a starting parameter: when launched, the platform transmits it in an event, and the same “Deep Link” trigger fires with the same payload. The difference is technical: QR for MAX now needs to be generated by an external service from a bot link - the “QR campaigns” section builds only a Telegram link.
The accounting of sources does not depend on the channel: in both cases, the source turns into a tag, and the tags are filtered in “Contacts” and end up in broadcasts. If you have offline locations, receipts and packaging are the cheapest way to understand what works.
6–7. Site rules, moderation and integration
Rules. Telegram has historically been loyal to bots: registration with @BotFather takes a minute, there are no business checks, restrictions relate mainly to spam. The downside is unpredictability: rules and limits change without warning, and there is virtually no support for business.
MAX operates in Russian jurisdiction: the bot is created in the MAX business account, the platform has formal requirements and a clear line of responsibility. For companies where everything is strict with lawyers - government contracts, medicine, finance - this is an argument: it is clear who is responsible for the platform and under what laws. For small businesses, the difference is almost not felt until a controversial situation arises.
Integrations. The Telegram ecosystem is huge: any service, payment system, CRM and spreadsheet can work with Telegram bots. MAX has an API, and CHBT works through it, but there are still noticeably fewer third-party ready-made bundles. In practice, this does not change much for a bot on the designer: in CHBT, integrations occur through the “HTTP request” action (POST with contact data and variables to your address - Make, n8n, Albato, your server) and the “Incoming webhook” trigger, and they are the same for all channels. What exactly is available is on the page integrations CHBT. Ready connections - to Bitrix24 and Omnidesk, the same for Telegram and MAX; There is no connection to amoCRM out of the box.
8. Risks: what to fear in each channel
Platforms have risks of different natures, and this is perhaps the main argument for not putting everything into one channel.
Telegram is a regulatory risk. The availability of the messenger in Russia is determined by the decisions of the regulator, not your actions. In 2025, calls were limited; Discussions about further measures arise regularly. A bot can be flawless and still become inaccessible to some clients. If Telegram is the only channel of communication with the base, you do not have a plan B.
MAX - platform risk. The young platform is changing: the rules for business are being clarified, the API is being updated, restrictions appear and disappear. The likelihood that MAX will be “turned off” is low; the likelihood that something in the bot’s behavior will have to be tweaked after the next update is noticeably higher. From CHBT's side, this is our job, not yours, but delays at such times are possible. What to do if the bot is silent - in MAX help.
The general risk is a base in one place. A contact in the messenger is tied to the messenger: a Telegram bot subscriber cannot be “transferred” to MAX. Therefore, it is better to immediately collect a phone number or e-mail in the “Data Collection” block: a card in “Contacts” with a phone number will survive any platform and is uploaded to CSV.
Five situations when you should leave one channel
Two channels are not a dogma. There are cases when it is more honest to launch one and not spread thin.
- Your clients are in one messenger, and you know this by the numbers. An English school for teenagers lives on Telegram; management company of an apartment building - increasingly in MAX. Don't argue with the base.
- The bot is needed for two weeks. Registration for an event, promotion, seasonal set - take a channel where there is already an audience, the second one simply won’t have time to recoup the attention.
- Login only via QR from offline media. One QR - one link. The “QR campaign” section in CHBT is building it for Telegram; if the audience is in MAX, prepare the link and QR for MAX, and do not print two codes on one sign.
- There is only one operator, and he is overloaded. The second channel is the second stream of questions in the Conversations. The inbox in CHBT is general, but this will not make a person have any more time.
- Customer or industry requirements. If the contract requires a Russian platform, the issue is closed in favor of MAX; if the audience is international, use Telegram.
In all other cases, it is not necessary to choose: the second channel in CHBT costs zero rubles (channels are included in the plan, including Free) and fifteen minutes to connect.
Conclusion: one flow, two channels
The difference between MAX and Telegram is the difference between doors, not rooms. The audience, the method of entry, the risks are different; The logic of the bot - lead, record, responses, notification, operator - is the same. In CHBT one project holds both channels: you connect Telegram using a token from @BotFather and MAX using a token from the MAX account for business, and the script, “Contacts”, “Conversations”, CRM and broadcasts are common. Where different texts are needed - the “Condition” block with the “Channel” check.
Practical order: start with a channel where there are already clients, bring the script to a working state in a week, then add a second one and put a separate deep link on it with a tag. In a month, “Contacts” will show which channel brings people - and this will be the answer to the question “MAX or Telegram” for your business, and not for an abstract market. Connection details are on the pages of the Telegram bot and of the bot MAX; Plans - on pricing page.
